take a look at some of the linked articles. American haiku tends not to lend itself to straight 5-7-5 (not usually anyway), a form that makes more sense in Japanese. Modern American haiku is more about capturing the spirit of haiku than about strict adherance to syllable counts--although that's fun when it works, too. The "in the moonlight a worm" website is particularly good.
